Nile Cruise vs Dahabiya: Which Is Right for Your Egypt Trip?
Choosing how to sail the Nile is one of the biggest decisions when planning Egypt. Both options take you between Luxor and Aswan past the same great temples, but the experience on board is very different. Here is how a classic Nile cruise ship compares with a traditional dahabiya, so you can choose what suits your travel style.
What is a Nile cruise ship?

Nile cruise ships are floating hotels with sun decks, a swimming pool, a restaurant and lounges. The most popular itineraries run between Luxor and Aswan in 3 or 4 nights. Luxury ships such as the Oberoi Philae, Oberoi Zahra and Sonesta St. George offer spacious cabins, fine dining and polished service.
What is a dahabiya?

A dahabiya is a traditional two-masted Nile sailing boat with only a handful of cabins, usually between 4 and 12. It sails at a slower pace, typically 4 or 5 nights between Esna and Aswan, and can moor at quiet riverbanks and small sites that large ships cannot reach, such as El Kab and Gebel el-Silsila.
Nile cruise ship vs dahabiya at a glance
| Nile cruise ship | Dahabiya | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Dozens of cabins | Usually 4 to 12 cabins |
| Typical length | 3 to 4 nights | 4 to 5 nights |
| Route | Luxor to Aswan, or Aswan to Luxor | Usually Esna to Aswan |
| Atmosphere | Hotel-style, more facilities | Intimate, quiet, close to the river |
| Extra stops | Main temples: Edfu, Kom Ombo | Main temples plus small sites and islands |
| Best for | Shorter trips, families, travelers who want amenities | Couples, small groups, slow travel, photographers |
Which should you choose?
Choose a Nile cruise ship if you have limited time, want a pool and more facilities, or are traveling with children.
Choose a dahabiya if you want a peaceful, unhurried journey with very few other guests, or if you are a small group that would like to charter a whole boat.
Many of our guests combine either option with a few days in Cairo for the Pyramids of Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum, and a trip to Abu Simbel from Aswan.
